Blueberry Fields Forever

One of the coolest field trips I went on as a kid at summer day camp was piling up in the church van, driving out to the country and going to the blueberry fields to pick as many blueberries imaginable. So naturally, being in the Carolinas, I thought peach picking would be even better! Well, apparently the peach crops got hit pretty hard this year, something about frost. I’m not a farmer so I have no idea. But after a failed attempt and driving an hour somewhere, I now know this information. Lesson learned. Call ahead.

So, this past weekend I double, triple verified that we could go blueberry picking at Bush N Vine in York, SC. We arrived around 9:30 am and I think that may have been a little late. They open at 8 am for a reason. It’s really, really, really hot out there. (you will notice this reoccurring summer theme) 

Walking into the store it’s a fresh fruit and vegetable bonanza. We had to grab a carton of blackberries because they looked amazing. We chose the large bucket $25 (small bucket $13), because, obviously I need a gallon of blueberries.  Let me tell you, this activity was one of the most fun mornings I’ve had in a while. The 3-year-old loved it! The 1-year old thought running between the rows of blueberry bushes was HILARIOUS. We laughed the whole time, and my son cherished the fact that he could pick the berries and not get into trouble. Also double bonus for a snack while you are having fun! Pro Tip: bringing an umbrella stroller for the walk back to the car; would have been nice, otherwise leave the giant stroller at home.   

Operation wear kids out worked. Within minutes of pulling out of the gravel lot they call a parking lot, both kids were sacked out. Success!
